Money serves a practical purpose in a world of limited resources. It is grossly misused and misrepresented as an end in itself, a benchmark of success, a goal to be reached for. Ideally, money is a symbolic representation of needs to be filled, like the ruble in the USSR. While money paid wages there was no real competition to get more money, since most people got more or less the same amount, and money was little more than a ration ticket.
Money is part of the transition in changing consciousness to the end goal of Communism, the stateless classless society where from each according to his ability to each according to his need is the founding principle of society, not questioned or debated but inherently internalized and respected, just as money is as an end in itself in this society.
Of course the spray painted statement is absolutely true - money did not exist in societies built from collective labour to fill the needs of all. However our consciousnesses are currently not compatible with this concept for the most part. So until every person reaches collective consciousness we need “money”.
